The US Environmental Protection Agency published its final rules for the management of hazardous waste pharmaceuticals in February. The new rules establish management standards more applicable to healthcare facilities, clarify regulations for reverse distribution, exempt over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies from hazardous waste management and institute a sewer ban for all hazardous waste pharmaceuticals starting August 2019.
The new hazardous waste pharmaceutical rules are in addition to the relatively recent controlled substance disposal rules of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Who should attend?
Small- and large quantity generators generating pharmaceutical hazardous waste will be required to train any employees handling those wastes in hazardous waste management at least once within six months of beginning duties. The current exception for employees handling pharmaceutical wastes only in satellite accumulation containers will no longer apply. (MPCA, Regulatory consensus on healthcare waste issues)
This may include physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, surgical technicians, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, maintenance technicians, and environmental services staff.
